My first proper pair of sunglasses, the ones I bought thinking I’d finally sorted myself out, had lenses so dark I couldn’t see the price on anything in the shop, including themselves. Within a month the arms had gone loose and they sat on my nose at an angle, like they were permanently unimpressed. What I learned is that the thing that actually matters with sunglasses isn’t how they look in the mirror for thirty seconds, it’s whether they still sit right after being shoved in a bag forty times.
A good pair starts with the hinges, not the lenses, because that’s what fails first. Spring hinges, the ones with a bit of give, outlast the rigid kind by a mile, and you can usually feel the difference just by opening and closing the arms in the shop. After that, weight. If they feel heavy in your hand they’ll feel heavy on your face after an hour, and you’ll end up pushing them up your nose every five minutes without noticing you’re doing it. Lenses should say UV400 somewhere, that’s the only number that matters, tint depth is just styling. If you’re only buying one pair, go for a neutral frame, tortoiseshell or plain black, in a shape that doesn’t scream one particular year, because the loud frames date fast and the plain ones carry you through several summers without looking like evidence against you.
They’re easiest with plain tops and simple necklines, where there’s nothing else fighting for attention above the waist. Denim, white shirts, linen, anything unfussy lets the glasses do their one job. Gold jewellery works better than silver with most frame colours, oddly, and hair down softens a stronger frame shape if you think it’s a bit much on you. What they fight with is pattern. A busy top and sunglasses with any kind of embellished arm just looks like too much is happening on one person.
They’re not much use for anything that needs real clarity, reading fine print, judging colours properly, or driving into low sun without actual polarisation, cheap tinted plastic will let you down in exactly those moments. And a statement frame that felt fun in the shop can turn out to dominate your whole face in every photo from the day, which is a discovery best made before an event, not during it. Buy the shape that suits your face over the shape that’s everywhere this month, and you’ll get years out of it rather than one good summer.
