Bracelets get written off as the jewellery you forget you're wearing, the thing that ends up tangled in a drawer with a necklace it was never introduced to. I think that reputation is only half fair. A good one earns a place on your wrist within a week and a cheap one tells on itself within a day, usually by leaving a green mark or a clasp that won't shut properly. I have both kinds and I know within a few wears which category a new one falls into.
The honest test of a bracelet is what it looks like after it has been knocked against a desk, caught on a jumper cuff a hundred times and left in a coat pocket over a wet weekend. Chain bracelets either keep their shine or go dull and slightly furred looking where the links rub together, and that is almost always down to the plating rather than the design. Sterling silver will tarnish if you leave it sitting in a damp bathroom, but a quick polish with a cloth brings it back, and I have never found that worth worrying about. Beaded ones are the ones I am most careful with, because the thread goes before anything else does, usually around the two year mark if you wear it daily, so I take mine off before washing up or anything that involves hot water and friction. For everyday wear, a bracelet has to survive being pulled off in a hurry along with a coat sleeve, and that comes down to a clasp you can actually operate one handed, not one that needs two people and a good light. Pairing is where bracelets quietly do more than people give them credit for. One good chain or a plain cuff sits under a shirt sleeve without a fuss, works with a jumper pushed up at the elbow, and does not fight with a watch the way a chunkier charm bracelet sometimes will. I tend to wear mine stacked two or three at a time now rather than one grand statement piece, because thinner bracelets layer without catching on each other, while a single heavy charm bracelet wants to be left alone to do its own thing.
If you are buying your first one, a plain chain in a mid weight is the sensible start, not so delicate it snaps the first time it catches on a bag strap, not so heavy it feels like a decision every morning.
I would start with gold toned rather than silver if you are only getting one, simply because it hides the small scuffs of daily wear for longer before it needs any attention.
