Autumn Jeans Outfit Ideas

Home › Autumn Jeans Outfit Ideas

My first pair of autumn jeans were a stiff dark blue that never softened, and they taught me that denim bought in September for "layering" usually just means too tight once a jumper's involved.

The pairing that works most often is simpler than people make it: a jumper that's slightly too big, a jacket with some structure to it, and boots that can handle a wet pavement without falling apart by half term. I tend to go for a fine knit tucked in, loosely, rather than stuffed in properly, with a shirt collar poking out if it's a cold morning, because jeans do the job of making everything else look less try hard. A denim jacket over a jumper confuses the eye and usually looks like you couldn't decide, so I leave that layering to spring. What changes in autumn is the shoe, really. Trainers stop working the second it rains properly, and a jean that's been hemmed for trainers suddenly looks too short with boots, so I check the length sitting down as well as standing, because that's when you notice if they're going to ride up and show three inches of ankle on a cold bus.

A good pair earns its stripes over months rather than on the first wear. Mine go through a stage around week three where the fabric starts to give at the knee and behind it, which is normal, but a well made jean gives evenly and a cheap one gives in one place and bags there forever, usually right at the knee, so by December you've got a permanent crease that looks like sitting down badly. I wash mine inside out, cold, as little as possible, and never tumble dry, because heat is what kills the recovery in the fabric and turns a good fitted jean into something closer to jogging bottoms by its second winter. Hanging them to dry takes longer but it's the difference between a jean that still holds its shape in November and one that's gone soft and shapeless by October half term.

The tell, in a shop, is in your hands before it's on your body. Pull the fabric sideways and see how much it springs back rather than stretching and staying there. Check the inside seams are overlocked properly and not just chain stitched and fraying already on the hanger. Good hardware doesn't rattle or feel light, the rivets sit flush, and the stitching on the pockets is dense rather than a few loose passes that will go within a month of regular wear.

Best for anyone who wants one reliable bottom half to build autumn mornings around, rather than a new outfit decision every day.
