The thing that catches people out with purses is the card slots. You count them in the shop, think "plenty", and then get home and realise half of them are too tight for a card with any texture on it, the raised numbers or the slightly thicker bank ones, so you're left shoving three cards into one slot and carrying the rest loose in your bag anyway. Still worth getting a proper one though, because a good purse is the difference between finding your contactless card in half a second at a till with a queue, and doing that performance where you empty everything onto the conveyor belt while someone behind you sighs.
Before you buy, check what the coin section actually does. Some have a zip pocket that gapes open the second it's half full, so coins escape into the lining of your bag and you find them months later stuck to a receipt. Check the stitching round the card slots too, cheap ones fray within a few months because that's the part that gets the most friction, in and out, in and out, probably forty times a day if you're me at a work event with a card machine on every table. And have a proper feel of the clasp or the popper, because a flimsy one stops closing properly within a year and then your purse just lives half open in your bag like it's given up.
As for what it goes with, a purse doesn't need to match your bag, it needs to survive being chucked into about six different bags over a week, the big work tote on Monday, the tiny going out bag on Friday, the gym bag at some point in between. So think about the actual size against the bags you own rather than how it looks sitting on a shelf. Mine goes from a canvas tote to a cross body to, embarrassingly, a coat pocket on nights when I can't be bothered with a bag at all, and it's survived all three for two years.
Colour wise, go for something that hides its own grubbiness, because purses get more handling than almost anything else you own. A soft tan, a deep navy, a proper black, all forgive the grime of daily life far better than anything pale, and pale ones look like they've been dragged along a pavement within a month regardless of how carefully you treat them.
Would I actually reach for this one every day, or does it just look good doing nothing in my bag?
