British Fashion

Home › British Fashion

For years I put British labels in the same mental drawer as school uniform suppliers, sensible but dull, the sort of thing your auntie would approve of. Then I bought a mac from a small label making things properly here rather than shipping the idea of "British" in from somewhere else, and wore it so hard the lining started to wear thin at the cuffs before anything else gave up. That's what changed it for me. It wasn't romantic, it was just good.

When you're looking at this stuff in the shop, the details tell you more than the label does. Check where it's actually made, not just where the brand is based, because plenty of names trade on being British while the stitching tells a different story. Feel the weight of the fabric in your hand, a proper wool coat should have some heft to it and not feel like it'll blow about in a bit of wind, and a cotton shirt should have a crispness that softens over washes rather than going limp after one. Look at the buttons, the seams, whether the lining sits flat or bunches when you move your arm. In terms of what it goes with, this is where it earns its keep in an ordinary week, a good knit or a well cut shirt from this corner of the shop will sit happily under the denim jacket you already own, or next to the plain trousers you reach for without thinking, it's not asking you to buy a whole new look to go with it. A proper coat does the heavy lifting over everything else in your cupboard for about five months of the year. As for when to wear it, think the damp end of autumn through to the start of spring for the outerwear and the knits, and the lighter cotton and linen pieces for the handful of warm weeks we get and pretend will last longer than they do. It suits a wet Tuesday at the school gates just as well as a proper lunch out, which is more than I can say for a lot of things in my own cupboard that only come out once a year and then sit there sulking.

The small thing that makes a good one worth the money, for me, is the inside of a coat collar, a nice bit of complementary tartan or a contrast facing that nobody sees except you when you're turning it up against the rain. Daft, I know, but it's the bit I touch every single time I put it on, and it's usually the first clue that someone bothered.
