This is the jacket that comes good the week the heating goes on but it's not cold enough for a proper coat yet, those grey mornings where you need something with a bit of structure over a t-shirt and jeans, or thrown on top of gym kit before you've worked out whether you're actually going to the gym or just the shop for milk.
It clashes fastest with anything else that's shouting, so skip pairing it with busy prints or chunky trainers in three competing colours, the whole point of this jacket is the clean line down the front and that gets lost under too much noise. It's also not the one to reach for if you need something properly warm, the fabric is usually thin enough to move with you, which feels brilliant walking fast but leaves you cold standing still at a bus stop in January, so treat it as a layer rather than the layer. Where it does earn a place is anywhere you want to look a bit more put together than a hoodie without trying, over a dress for the school run, over gym kit for the commute, zipped halfway with something plain underneath. Stick to navy, black, a soft grey or a muted green if you want something that goes with what you already own, the brighter colourways look great on the hanger and then sit unworn because they only work with about two other things. A slight sheen finish photographs well but can look a bit much in daylight, so if you're between a matte and a shiny version, matte wears easier day to day.
Before you buy, check the zip pull is big enough to grab with cold fingers, that sounds trivial until you're stood outside fighting a tiny metal tab in the rain. Check the cuffs too, ribbed ones that have gone slack from one wash in the shop are a sign they'll stretch out properly after a month of real wear. Feel the weight in your hand before you try it on, a jacket that feels too light in store usually feels flimsy on, and one with a bit of structure in the shoulder tends to hold its shape longer than one that's all soft drape. Pockets matter more than people expect from something this casual, so put your hand in and check they're deep enough for a phone without it threatening to fall out every time you bend down.
Tomorrow morning I'd wear mine over a plain white tee with straight leg jeans and trainers, nothing else doing much work, letting the jacket be the one interesting thing in the outfit.
