Hold it up under the shop lights first, not just on the hanger. If you can see your bra through it there, you'll definitely see it on a dance floor, and the only thing worse than a static cling moment is finding out about it in front of everyone you know. Pinch the fabric between your fingers. If it feels thin and slippery like a bin bag, put it back, that's the cheap stuff that'll go see through the second you sit down.
Good satin, the kind with a bit of weight to it, actually holds up better than you'd expect over a few wears, but it needs looking after properly or it'll let you down fast. Check the seams and any bias cut panels, because satin loves to fray and pucker at the first loose thread, and once it starts it doesn't stop. Hand wash it or take it to be cleaned rather than chucking it in with everything else, a hot wash will turn that lovely sheen dull and crispy in one go, I've seen it happen to a dress that cost more than my weekly food shop. Hang it, don't fold it away in a drawer, because creases in satin sit stubborn and a quick iron on the wrong setting will leave a shiny patch that never comes out.
This is an evening dress through and through, and it knows it. Christmas parties, a wedding where you want to look like you made an effort without trying a corset, a birthday do somewhere with low lighting that'll be kind to every seam. Cooler months suit it best, honestly, because it layers under a coat beautifully and the fabric itself isn't warm, so a summer garden party in full sun will have you sweating through something that's meant to look cool and unbothered.
Where it falls apart is anywhere practical. Satin clings to every lump, bump and lunch you've had that day, it shows every mark, and it is not a dress for standing near candles, barbecues, or anyone holding a glass of red wine near you. Skip anything with heavy embellishment or a busy pattern on top, the fabric's already doing a lot of visual work and extra fuss just fights for attention. Big structured jackets fight it too, you want something softer over the top or nothing at all.
It is a brilliant dress for one very specific kind of night, and a genuinely bad choice for almost every other kind of day.
