French Outfits

Home › French Outfits

The mistake is treating it like a costume. Breton top, red lip, a beret from a fancy dress shop, and suddenly the whole thing reads as a theme rather than a way of getting dressed. French dressing, the kind that actually works, is about restraint and good basics, not about ticking off every cliché in one outfit.

This is a look that earns its keep from early spring through to the start of autumn, when you want to look put together without looking like you've tried. A crisp shirt and tailored trousers for a lunch that matters, a linen dress and flat sandals for a weekend away, a striped top under a blazer for work when it's too warm for a jumper but too cool for bare arms. It's also good for travel, because the pieces tend to be simple shapes in natural fabrics that don't crease into a disaster the second you sit on a train for three hours.

Where it stops working is anywhere that needs a bit of drama or sparkle. A smart dinner with proper glamour, a wedding, anywhere you need to be noticed from across a room. This look is quiet on purpose, and if you push it towards sequins or anything too fitted, it stops being French and starts being fancy dress again. It also struggles in deep winter, when the fabrics that make it work, linen, fine cotton, lightweight wool, aren't warm enough on their own and layering them up kills the simplicity that was the whole point.

Keep it away from anything with a big logo or a slogan across the chest, it undoes the understated thing immediately. Avoid piling on accessories too, a statement bag and statement jewellery and a bold scarf all at once just looks busy rather than considered. One good accessory, not four decent ones, is the rule here.

The difference between a good version and a disappointing one is almost always in the fabric and the cut rather than anything flashy. A striped top in proper cotton jersey keeps its shape wash after wash, where a thin polyester one goes see through and loses its stripe within a month. Trousers need a good drop, nothing that pulls at the hip or bags at the knee by lunchtime. Linen should feel like linen, a bit of weight and texture, not a flimsy cotton mix pretending. Buttons and seams are worth a proper look too, because that's where the cheap ones give themselves away first.

Reach for this when you want to look like you've made an effort without anyone being able to say exactly how.
