The week it properly clicks for me is the first proper cold snap, the one where you walk the dog or do the school run and your feet go numb through trainers within about four minutes. That's when the sheepskin boots come out of the cupboard and don't go back in until March. Mine lived under my desk for most of January last year because the office radiator is a rumour rather than a reality, and I'd just swap trainers for boots the second I sat down. That's the job these do best, warmth with zero effort, not a fashion statement dressed up as footwear.
Where they stop working is anything involving actual weather beyond cold and dry. Rain turns suede into a sad, dark patch that never quite dries right, and slush on a pavement will have you sliding about because that flat sole has no grip to speak of. I wore mine on an icy school run once, size 7, my normal size, and spent the whole walk doing a sort of penguin shuffle past parents in proper boots looking smug. Cheap versions give the game away fast if you know where to press: squeeze the back of the heel, and if it collapses flat instead of holding its shape, that's thin lining and a boot that'll look trodden down by February. Run a hand across the sheepskin inside, it should feel dense and springy, not thin enough that you can feel the insole through it. Check the stitching round the sole, a proper one is double stitched and the sole itself has a bit of flex without feeling like cardboard. Suede that's been treated well has a slight nap you can brush with your fingers, and the colour should be even, not patchy where it's been sprayed to disguise a lower grade hide.
They clash badly with anything tailored or anything you've ironed. Smart trousers, a structured coat, a proper office blazer, all of it looks wrong the second a slouchy sheepskin boot turns up underneath, like you got dressed by committee. Keep them with leggings, jeans with a bit of room at the ankle, soft jumper dresses, the kind of oversized knit you'd wear to do absolutely nothing productive. They're brilliant for a cold weekend, the school run, travelling when you want your feet comfortable rather than impressive, and any outfit built around being warm first and looking put together second, which honestly is most of my winter.
