Off the shoulder dresses have a reputation for being a bit performative, the kind of thing that looks marvellous on a hanger and then slides about all evening until you're hoiking it back up every time you reach for a drink. I used to think that was the whole story. It isn't, not if the neckline is cut properly and sits where it should without elastic doing all the work, but I'd be lying if I said every version earns that trust.
The cheap ones tend to give themselves away in the first hour. The elastic is too tight or too slack, there's no real structure holding the shoulders where they're meant to be, and by the time you've sat down to eat something the whole dress has rotated a few degrees and you're adjusting it under the table. A better made one has a bit of boning or a proper lining at the bodice, enough to hold its shape without you thinking about it, and that's the difference between wearing a dress and babysitting one. Don't pair it with anything that competes for attention up top, a statement necklace is wasted here and a bag with a long strap across the body will fight the whole point of the neckline. Plain colours work hardest for me, a deep teal or a block black, because the shoulder line is already doing the talking and a loud print just turns it into noise. A good caramel or rust suits warmer months particularly well, and I've had more wear out of mine in late spring and early autumn than in the height of summer, when bare shoulders and strong sun are not friends. It's a strong choice for a wedding, a long lunch somewhere with proper chairs, an evening that doesn't involve much walking, less so for a day that has you carrying bags, pushing through crowds or sitting at a desk, where you'll spend half your time hitching it back into place.
Where it genuinely falls short is anything active or anything cold. There's no version of this dress that works with a coat you actually need, and a cardigan over the top rather defeats the purpose of the whole thing. If you run for buses, carry a child, or need your arms free for most of the day, this isn't the dress for that day, however nice it looks on the rail.
Wash it on a cool cycle and let it drip dry rather than tumbling it, the elastic at the neckline loses its grip far faster in a hot dryer than anywhere else.
