Three wears in, a slip skirt tells on itself. The seam that sat neatly at your hip in the shop has drifted round to the front by the time you've sat through a meeting and walked to the bus stop, because the bias cut moves with you whether you want it to or not, and the slit that looked demure on the hanger has a way of opening further than you'd planned the second time you cross your legs.
Chunky knits and heavy boots fight this skirt rather than complement it, there's too much weight above and below for the fabric to hold its own, and a thick belt will just bunch the material and ruin the drape you bought it for in the first place. I've learned to keep the top half fairly plain, a fine knit or a simple shirt, and let the skirt do the talking. Colourwise, the ones I actually reach for are the quieter shades, ivory, a deep bottle green, a muted blush, because high shine in a bright colour reads costume rather than clothes, and matte finishes forgive a lot more in daylight than anything with a wet look sheen. A well made one is sewn properly on the bias with the grain running the way it should, has a weighted hem so it hangs rather than floats about your ankles, and uses a fabric with enough body to it, a heavier viscose or a proper silk blend, that it doesn't crease the second you sit down or cling to tights with static the moment the central heating kicks in. The disappointing ones are thin, slippery in the wrong way, and show every seam line and every bit of underwear you're wearing, which nobody warns you about until you're stood under a shop light wondering why it looks fine until you move.
Where it genuinely struggles is cold weather without proper layering underneath, bare legs in a slip skirt in January is a short lived idea, and windy days are not kind to a fabric with this little resistance to catching on everything, your own tights included. Offices with a stricter dress code can make it feel like the wrong register too, it reads relaxed rather than sharp, so save it for days where that's the point. Cheap polyester versions pill at the inner thigh within a few wears and never quite lose the static, so if you're only going to own one, spend a bit more on the fabric and check the hem weight before you buy, because that's the detail that decides whether it hangs well or rides up on you by the afternoon.
